Doxey, Columbus - believed to be Native American - PA to NC Prior to 1911

Currituck North Carolina Doxeys, which began with John Doxey -- whose first deed there in the mid-1700's listed Princess Anne Co, VA as his prior residence. His brother reportedly was Rev War vet Jeremiah Doxey

The Doxey Family/North Carolina The Doxeys were a family of early Virginia (and possibly Maryland) and Currituck County, North Carolina. There were two original known Doxeys -- Jeremiah, a Revolutionary War veteran, and John, who first appeared in Currituck County North Carolina ca 1769. I had originally been interested in this family because of an Indiana death certificate that indicated that my ancestor's maiden name was Doxey. There was a further connection because a Currituck Taylor relative had married a Currituck Doxey and moved to a similar part of Indiana. In seeking to make a connection, I had collected all general information about Doxeys in Currituck County from the time of John Doxey's original settlement to the Civil War. Additionally, there is a brief section on Jeremiah Doxey and the Doxey (William) and his family who moved to Indiana. The sources of this information are probate, tax, land, census, local history, military, local court, and other public records.

Deed Record, 1769. [Deedbook 2, pg. 118] On March 29, 1769, John Doxey purchased land in Currituck County from Johnathan (sic) Fisher and his wife Mary. John Doxey is listed as being from "Saint Maryes County". The one apparent possible County at that time with that name was in Maryland. John Doxey -- "Doxey Family Genealogy". A document by this name, which is not dated nor with many sources listed, exists with some Doxey family members. This genealogy begins with John, cites seven children for him -- John, James, Sanford, Dempsey, Sophie, Nancy, and William -- and lists descendants for James Sanford and William. About John, this genealogy states that he was born ca 1730-35 in England, and further: "Jeremiah Doxey and his brother, John, landed at Beaufort, North Carolina from England, but the date of their arrival is not known. According to DAR records Jeremiah was a sailing master on the 'Tartar' in the Revolutionary War and settled in Tennessee which was part of North Carolina until 1796. Family stories are that John Doxey was also a seafaring man, but no proof of this was found. Documents show that he farmed in Currituck, North Carolina, and died there in 1824. He is on the list of taxables in Currituck County, 1779 and subsequent years. Occupation, farmer. Married Mary Fisher, died July 1831 in Currituck County, North Carolina."About the four children of John who are not detailed in the Doxey genealogy, it is stated that they were 1) John, born ca 1767 and died before May 1820, lived in Chowan County North Carolina and had four sons; 2) Dempsey, born ca 1780-90 and died November 1840, married Fannie Parker, daughter of Peter Parker and Fanny. Dempsey and Fannie had three children born between 1825 and 1830, Nancy, Ardelia and Thomas E.; 3) Sophie Doxey, married Henry Gray and moved to Rowan County, North Carolina, and 4) Nancy, who married William Mercer and had two children, a boy Joseph who died young and a girl.

List of Taxables, Currituck County, 1779. For the year 1779, A General List of the Names of the Taxable Inhabitants of Currituck County, With the Several Sums Each person is rated in the Assessment Books . . . All taken from the Assessment Books and Carefully Examined this 18th Day of March 1780 -- John Doxey (5/2/8) [This is the first reference I have found of any Doxey in Currituck records. There is more about him shown with his 1790 census entry]. This list does not give anything but the taxable worth of the property owners property, indicating that the numbers above are pounds, shillings, and pence. Land Entry, 1787. [Note: there are land entries from the period 1778-95 beginning below. A new land system was established in this period to supplant the prior colonial system. Each entry represents a claim to an appointed entry taker for vacant or unclaimed land that was technically the property of the state. If a survey and other items in the process were successfully completed, the new owner would have twelve months to register the grant in the County. The books containing these entries are contained in the State Archives and were abstracted by Dr. A.B. Pruitt and published in 1992.

Records referred to a son, Dr. Stephen H. Doxey, of Hardeman Cty, TN. Information provided to J. A. Doxey of Grand Chenier, Louisiana on April 12, 1910 by S.H. Doxey of Berryville, Carroll County, Arkansas, states that Jeremiah was an English sea-captain, married Roda Haney in North Carolina and had six children, Thomas, who died near Nashville, Tennessee, Stephen, who died in Texas, Jeremiah, Ann, John Sanford, and Samuel Haney Doxey, who died in Tippah County, Mississippi. Jeremiah and his wife Roda died at their son's, Dr. Stephen Doxey at New Castle, Hardemann County, Tennessee. She died May 24, 1839, he on April 22, 1842, both on Friday.William Doxey and Catherine Taylor/North Carolina and IndianaThere is a William Doxey shown in LDS records marrying Catherine Taylor, and they had Julia, born about 1831, and Mary, born about 1837. The profile of this William and Catherine match the William in Tippecanoe County, Indiana below.Dorothy Doxey SwansonOs family group sheets show that William was the son of Sanford Doxey and -- Bray. William was born October 10, 1799 and died August 6, 1845 in Tippecanoe County. His one sibling from his fatherOs first wife is Matilda, born in Currituck County circa 1800, and shown with his widow Catherine in the 1850 census, having married someone named Mosier or Mosley. The family group sheets show that William and Catherine had six children: Thomas, born November 1831 and died April 5, 1877; Latimer, born January 15, 1833 and died March 22, 1913; Julia, born 1835; William, born November 8, 1834 and died March 28, 1904; Mary B., born March 2, 1838 and died November 14, 1906; and Charles Taylor born July 13, 1841 and died May 1, 1898. Catherine died November 1, 1896 in Zumbrota, Minnesota.According to the Doxey Family Genealogy, Oland in Currituck was given to Catherine Doxey by her father Reuben Taylor in 1828. William and Catherine (Katey) sold that property to John Simmons. Katey personally appeared in court for sale Nov. 25, 1835. William and Catherine Doxey purchased land in Jackson Township, Tippecanoe Co., Indiana 1835.O [A copy of the deed for William Doxey's land purchase, provided by Dorothy Swanson, shows that William is listed as "William Doxey of the County of Fountain and State aforementioned". He was probably living with Charles and Cortney at the time of his land purchase in Tippecanoe County -- connecting them in Indiana even further.] OAfter WilliamOs death in 1845, Catherine sold the Indiana farm, and she and the children moved to Illinois[Matilda wrote her brother Zachariah Doxey in 1860 from Pontiac, Livingston County, Illinois -- That letter is dated November 11, 1860 and reads: My dear brother it is with pleasure that I have the opportunity of serving you a few lines to let you know that I am well. At present hoping that these few lines may find you the same. I received a letter from you and was glad to hear from you and my father and grand children. I wish you would wright and let me know how all the Doxeys is and Brays and Mr. ? is getting along. And I want you to go to fathers and get my age and send it to me for I have lost the record I had. I am living at G.M. Allison. I want you to tell Ben ? to send Tom Doxey that is here any news ??? her of all kinds. So no more at present but remain your affectionate sister until death." A p.s. reads: "Direct your letters to Pontiac, Livingston Co., Illinois. I wish you would send me some money if theres any coming to me for I am not able to work much and have become a county charge and I will not go to the poor house."]. Later in 1850Os, they moved to Zumbrota, Goodhue County, Minnesota. Catherine lived there with her daughter Mary Doxey Person until her death in 1896.OInterestingly, there were three DoxeyOs from Indiana in the civil war pension index, all having served in the same unit -- Company K of the 16th Indiana Infantry. William Doxey filed for his pension on May 25, 1888 from Minnesota, and his widow Parmelia Doxey applied for her pension from Minnesota on November 4, 1904. The widowOs name matches that in the family group sheets of Dorothy Doxey Swanson, as does the 1904 death year for William. Also shown were Charles Doxey, having filed for a pension on October 29, 1864, and Edward O. Doxey, having filed for a pension on June 13, 1878. There were no wives or widows listed for Charles or Edward, and there doesnOt appear to be an Edward in William and CatherineOs family. The 1877 Land Map of Goodhue County, Minnesota, shows W. Doxy with 80 acres in Section 14, L. Doxy with 44 acres nearby in Section 23, and the only Person in Goodhue County land records at the time, G. Person, with 20 acres in Section 36 right on the outskirts of Zumbrota.William Doxey is shown in the 1840 census in Tippecanoe County, Indiana, a man between forty and fifty, with a woman between thirty and forty, a boy between ten and fifteen, three boys and one girl between five and ten, and one girl under five.Catherine Doxey is shown in Jackson Township, Tippecanoe County in 1850, 39, born in Indiana, with Thomas, 17, a farmer, Julia 15, and Latimore, 15, also a farmer, and all three born in North Carolina. With them are William 14, Mary 13, and Charles, 10, all born in Indiana. Also with them are Matilda Mosier, 50, Samuel (Lemuel?) Portwood, 50, both born in North Carolina, and Thomas Ives, 15, born in Indiana. Dorothy Swanson indicates that Julia was likely the child of William's half-brother Zachariah, and was not of this family.Charles Taylor Doxey -- son of Catherine and William. From the History of Madison County, Indiana: "Charles T. Doxey was born in Tippecanoe County, Indiana, July 13, 1841. A few years later his father died and when fourteen years old, the boy persuaded his mother to go to Minnesota. There he worked on a farm for about a year, giving most of his earnings to his mother, and later went to Fairbury, Illinois, where he worked for his board while attending school. In 1861, he was employed in a warehouse in Anderson and in July of that year entered the volunteer service as first sergeant of Company A, 19th Indiana Infantry. Later he was made second lieutenant but resigned and became captain of Company K, 16th Indiana Infantry. At the close of the war, he had saved about $3,000, with which he embarked in the manufacture of staes and heading. In 1876, he was elected to the state senate. He built the opera house in Meridian street, Anderson, and after it was destroyed by fire rebuilt it, and he was one of the directors of the first natural gas company at Anderson. In many other ways Major Doxey was intimately associated with the industrial and financial affairs of his adopted city. He died on April 30, 1898." A photo refers to him as "Hon. Charles T. Doxey, Ex-Member of Congress, Anderson, Indiana."There is a biography of Charles in the 1880 book of "Eminent and Self-Made Men of the State of Indiana", in which it states that his father was from South Carolina and was of French descent. It mentions that he lived in Fairbury, Illinois, and details his exploits during the Civil War. There is also a biography of Charles in the 1980 Biographical Directory of the Indiana General Assembly, 1816-1899, Vol. 1. It states that he was elected to the Indiana Senate in an 1877 special election, representing Delaware and Madison Counties. He is also shown as having served three terms as an Anderson (Ind.) City Council, and was elected to the U.S. House for a term in 1883.Charles T. Doxey is shown to have purchased land in Livingston County, Illinois on November 18, 1862. It was one hundred twenty-eight acres. This is the same County from which his aunt Matilda Doxey Mosier wrote the letter above to Currituck County in 1860. Charles cousin, Polly Taylor Bake and her husband Asher, are shown to have purchased land in Livingston County about this time also.
